A rare and exceptionally characterful 18th-century French octagonal marble font, carved from richly variegated Brèche de Verdun, a distinctive brecciated marble historically quarried in southwestern France. The exceptional stone is the principal feature of this piece, displaying a dramatic natural composition of warm ivory, blush, burgundy and grey veining, punctuated by contrasting dark mineral fragments. The font retains the authentic marks of centuries of use, including surface wear and minor losses consistent with its age. There is one more noticeable loss to the lower right portion, together with several small, unobtrusive losses along the edges. Structurally sound and perfectly watertight, this remarkable piece is suitable for continued use as a working font or basin
