An early 18th century, urn shaped stone font

Reference N°:

248

An elegant and rare early 18th-century circular font, carved from a richly textured black fossil stone with natural white veining and visible fossil inclusions. The urn-shaped bowl features a finely proportioned silhouette, with a subtly flared rim and gently rounded body.

The surface exhibits a hammered and chiseled finish. Several small chips and minor losses are visible along the upper edge and body, consistent with age and use, adding character without compromising structural integrity.

At the base, an ancient metal anchorage point remains embedded, indicating the font’s original fixed installation. Despite its age, the font remains in excellent usable condition—both a functional piece and a striking sculptural artifact.
