A rare, 18th century octagonal stone font

Reference N°:

243

An unusually shaped, octagonal stone font. Carved out of "Petit Granit", a dense, fossil-rich Belgian limestone with a dark grey hue and distinctive scattered crinoid fragments. This particular font features an alternating finish across its eight faces—each of the flat panels exhibits a chiseled texture, with sharp, deliberate tooling marks providing a slightly coarse, linear surface. These alternate with curved faces that have been hammered, giving a subtly dimpled, matte appearance that contrasts with the sharper geometry of the chiseled sides. Slightly chamfered edges at the top. A circular basin is recessed into the top. The interior shows minor pitting and discoloration. The body shows evidence of wear, especially around the corners and lower sections. Small chips and flaking at the base. Otherwise in excellent, usable condition. Structurally sound.
