A LATE 17TH CENTURY, SCALLOP SHAPED MARBLE FONT

A rare, scallop shaped oval marble font. The concave exterior of the font mimics the radiating ridges of a scallop shell, gracefully fanning out from a central, lower point. Carved out of "Saint Cyr au Mont d'Or" marble, once quarried in the region of Lyon, France. It is is notable for its warm, grey tones and its distinctive inclusions of fossilised shells and crystalline formations.

In very good, usable condition. Some wear, chips and losses on the body (please refer to pictures). Structurally sound, no cracks or breaks. The inner surface of the basin is smooth and allows a perfect drainage of the water.
